Athens Video Art Festival, returns with an impressive and celebrational edition. We invite you to live the experience from the 14th to the 17th of May 2009, at “Technopolis” of the Municipality of Athens.
It is the biggest festival of digital arts and new media that represents Greece internationally, aiming to the promotion of digital culture. The festival has won the support of artists, institutions and public, that attend it every year.
The festival includes art works from a broad spectrum of digital creativity, presentations of the worlds' biggest festivals with exclusive material and representatives, academic tributes, special collaborations, and concerts. Mostly we are characterized by our imagination and our experimental attitude.
This year we inaugurate two new categories; animation and digital image, that add up to the ones already known to the public; video art, installations, web art and performance. 1.368 artists from 58 countries submitted their proposals for Athens Video Art Festival 09.
The public will enjoy a historical tribute to Nam June Paik. 31 videos of the most important representative of video art will be screened during a tribute that exceeds 7.5 hours of recorded material. John Hanhardt, Film and Media Consulting Curator of Smithsoniam Museum of American Art and curator of the last retrospective exhibition of Nam June Paik at the Guggenheim “The Worlds of Nam June Paik” will deliver a speech on the life and work of the Korean video artist.
The admirers of moving pictures will enjoy unique presentations, such as animation showcases from Milano Film Festival and Pratt Institute, video art from the latest edition of Transmediale and Goethe Institut and two films that will be screened for the first time in Greece: "Kurt Cobain: About a Son", and "Introspective" in collaboration with In - Edit Beefeater Musical Documental Festival de Barcelona.
Also, especially for Athens Video Art Festival 09, we will present the Robotic Arts Performance "Grace State Machines", a project by Bill Vorn, professor of Electronic Arts at the Concordia University.
Every day after the screenings, there will be concerts starting at 21:00, and concluded at midnight.
This year we celebrate our 5th edition, and we invite you to live the experience at Athens Video Art Festival 09, at “Technopolis” of the Municipality of Athens at Gazi, from the 14th to the 17th of May.
