rethinking the idea of remote
A two-day international colloquial to take place on Fogo Island on June 24 and 25. The colloquial will focus on the idea of the 'remote,' primarily as it relates to the creation, presentation and reception of contemporary art in non-urban contexts.
In the evening of June 23rd at 7 pm the opening of three new studios will take place and participants are invited to attend that event as well.
The colloquial will traverse the islands with formal and informal discussions happening at all time, also including presentations by artists, curators, hunters, critics, laypersons, writers, researchers and thinkers from the province and other parts of Canada, North America, Europe and Asia. These participants will address a wide range of issues related to contemporary art and the creative industries. The colloquial will greatly encourage participation and engagement from the audience, local residents and 'strangers' alike.
The idea is to address fundamental and controversial questions like:
What are the reasons to make art, who makes it and whom is it for?
Do artists need residencies far away from their base, or do they not have a choice?
Should the geographical and cultural location of an art project matter in any way?
The list of those who have been invited to participate is not complete but includes: Kitty Scott, head of Visual Arts at the Banff Centre; Nicolaus Schafhausen, director/curator at Witte de With in Rotterdam/Netherlands; Joseph Grima architect/writer/editor for Domus magazine; Angela Antle, artist/writer Newfoundland; Teresa Gleadowe editor/curator UK; Tom McDonough critic/writer US; Marc Meyer director NAG, Canada; Robert Sirman director CCA; Mary Lewis filmmaker Newfoundland; Silke Otto-Knapp artist, UK.
Participants will be drawn from all sections of the population of the Islands, with the addition of individuals and professionals travelling into the colloquial, visiting artists and filmmakers participating in the Residency and Production Programs, as well as representatives from government departments and cultural organizations.
From June 2: Open call for residencies in 2012–2013. Deadline is July 31st.
Fogo Island Arts Corporation is a contemporary arts experiment on Fogo Island and Change Islands.The Arts Corp takes a leading role in regenerating the islands by delivering an integrated strategy incorporating the arts, geo tourism and social enterprise.
The Arts Corp sees arts and creativity as powerful means of stimulating and enhancing a resilient social ecosystem, while working as an integral partner of other approaches. All Arts Corp programmes interact at every level and progress in close dialogue with each other and a diversity of partners and collaborators.
Each focuses on themes inspired by Fogo Island's and Change Islands' unique place and people while reaching out beyond the islands to mainland Canada and internationally. The Arts Corporation seeks out, initiates, develops and directs a spectrum of collaborative, interdependent processes which draw together, engage and create benefits for the widest range of parties on an equal footing—from visiting to local artists, local people to 'strangers', island-based to foreign entrepreneurs, local fishermen to environmentalists—making use of Arts Corp's assets, including its studios, project spaces, diversity of media and staff.
Arts Corp activities have two intertwined strands—an international Residency Programme and a Production Programme, both of which engage with locally inspired as well as trans-national processes.
