Frogtopia.Kongkornucopia

54th Venice Biennale The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (ADC) announced today that it will present the exhibition “Frogtopia.Hongkornucopia” at the 54th Venice Biennale (Visual Arts) from June to November 2011. Featuring the works of local artist Kwok Mang-ho (a.k.a Frog King), the exhibition is under the curatorship of Benny Chia, Tsang Tak-ping and Wong Shun-kit in association with Hong Kong Fringe Club (HKFC).

This is the sixth time for the ADC to present the works of Hong Kong visual artists in an international arts arena, with an aim to enhance exchange and communication between Hong Kong and other countries in the world.

“Frogtopia.Hongkornucopia” uses “frog” as a symbol signifying the unique artistic style of Frog King. Through a countless number of mixed-media art works, Frog King intends to transform the whole exhibition space into “Frogtopia”, a space “taken over” by the artist with “a forest” of expanding installation pieces. This inexhaustibility is in fact obviously tied in with another made-up word in the exhibition titled “Hongkornucopia”, which originates from “cornucopia”, a magical goat's horn with an inexhaustible store of fruits and grains coming out of it.

The ADC has taken part in the Biennale in the name of Hong Kong, China since 2001. The total number of visitors of the past five exhibitions has been on the rise and exceeded 330,000.

This year, the exhibition is situated at a prime location adjacent to the main exhibition area – Arsenale, Campo della Tana, Castello 2126 - 30122 Venezia. It opens from 10am to 6pm, 4 June to 27 November 2011 (close on Mondays except 6 June, 15 August and 21 November).

To nurture local arts talents, the HKFC launches an Exhibition Internship Programme for the 54th Venice Biennale and is now open for application. Selected intern(s) will be fully integrated into the curatorial team and responsible for monitoring the operation of the exhibition in Venice for six weeks. The programme will be supplemented with briefing and sharing sessions hosted by the curators and artist. Application forms and detailed guidelines are now available at the HKFC's website (www.hkfringeclub.com).

The Venice Biennale, a world-renowned visual arts exhibition, was first held in 1895. This year, a new record of 87 national pavilions and more than 40 collateral events will be set up in the Arsenale, Giardini and across the city of Venice.

The exhibition is organized by Hong Kong Arts Development Council and curated by Benny Chia, Tsang Tak-ping and Wong Shun-kit in association with Hong Kong Fringe Club.
