History of the Venice Music Biennale
The Venice Biennale's International Festival of Contemporary Music was established in 1930 and was the first festival to run alongside the International Art Exhibition, that had characterized the birth of the Biennale back in 1895. Over the years, the Festival presented world premieres by Strawinsky, Prokofiev and Nono, and its tradition is renewed today under the directorship of Luca Francesconi.

76 composers, more than 80 pieces, 27 of them new, over 20 events including concerts, installations, audio-visual performances, workshops, meetings, concentrated in an 8-day programme, from September 24th through October 1st: this is the 55th International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta.
“This year’s festival too – states the President – becomes the stage for young professionals, confirming the Biennale’s intention to introduce to the world the most significant experiences of individual composers and ensembles who are beginning their career, often successfully, in the world of contemporary music”.
MUTANTI is the title of the 55th edition directed by Luca Francesconi, who observes: “Perhaps we are witnessing a sort of genetic mutation of western culture, of our tradition. We live in a world that makes not only thought, exploration and effort, but pencil and paper, practice and crafting as well, seem anachronistic. Now that everything is available at the click of a mouse, the temptation of erasing our memory is becoming increasingly evident, as we dream of becoming lighter. The 2011 Music Biennale talks about mutants, about something that is ending, at least in the form familiar to us now, to become something else”.
