YOKO ONO
NTON'S MEMORY
The exhibition has been designed especially for the rooms of Palazzetto Tito and is a series of new installations that incorporate some earlier works as points of reference. It includes films, sound compositions, sculptures, and drawings, as well as a number of interactive installations. At the centre of the display, two filmed versions of her 1964 performance work Cut Piece, from 1965 and 2003, will be shown. In this work, the artist lets the public cut away parts of her clothing little by little. In the first version Yoko Ono is thirty-two years old, and in the second version she is seventy, giving a sense of the marks left on us by the passing of time. Military helmets from the Second World War with pieces of sky inside; the film of a woman desperately attempting to free herself from her bra (a metaphor for women's liberation); an insistent coughing sound; tables, pens and paper for whoever wants to write their own thoughts and leave a trace of them; the book of recipes for artistic actions, Grapefruit (1964), left lying around like a generative element for all the rest; tables for playing all-white chess in peace and quiet, in the main chamber of a Venetian chamber between lancet windows opening onto nature or closed with coloured glass…all this and much more, along with a moving soundtrack, will complete the exhibition, punctuated also by the hand of the artist, who will write new pieces directly on the walls.
The entire exposition in the rooms of Palazzetto Tito will constitute a unitary whole evoking “ANTON'S MEMORY”; something that may be looked on as a codified memory, i.e. the story of an adult son rethinking through the existential vicissitudes of his mother through symbols and objects.
An artist's book, Other Rooms, will be published on the occasion of “ANTON'S MEMORY” (Charta, Milan)
FATA MORGANA
by REBECCA HORN
In its St. Mark's Square venue in Venice, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation is proud to host a solo exhibition of the work of the German artist Rebecca Horn.
The artist is one of the few on the current arts scene to have engaged with such an astounding number of different artistic languages, from performance to sculpture to poetry, not to mention film and opera. The themes that she deals with are of a universal nature: love, the challenges of maintaining one's physical and psychological health, and the transient nature of things. Her approach has made the artist stand out from the beginning of the 1970s as an important pioneer of her generation of many performance practices, environmental installations and sculpture in terms of her dialogue with space, history and politics.
In the gallery, the exhibition unfolds as she speaks to us of love as a Morgan Le Fay figure: an unavoidable illusion, fascinating and at the same time dangerous.
The work to be screened is a reedited version of the film Buster's Bedroom shot in 1990 with actors includine Valentina Cortese and Donald Sutherland. The new version, produced especially for the occasion, also features images of the artist painting and the music is composed by Hayden Chisholm.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Charta, Milan.
OPEN STUDIOS / ATELIER APERTI
For over one century, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation has continued to serve the purpose for which it was conceived by its founder, the Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa providing young artists with atelier and shows.
The studios are now in Palazzo Carminati, along with the prestigious Cloisters of St.s Cosma and Damiano on the Giudecca Island and in Palazzo Carminati.
For the 2009 edition, the artists selected were: Agne Raceviciute, Blauer Hasa, Valeria Cozzarini, Estevan Bruno, Giulio Frigo, Elisa Strinna, Alberto Scodro, Lea Jazbec, Andrea Kvas, Automatic Books, Laure Keyrouz and Ayano Yamamoto.
In June, as part of OPEN STUDIOS / ATELIER APERTI, the young art generation will open up their studios during the start of the 53rd International Arts Biennale of Venice, making them visible to the public from 3th to 10th June.
Alongside this initiative, thanks to the contribution of Moleskine (the main sponsor of the activities of the artists' studios), a special notebook will be issued, dedicated to the young artists: Atelier BLM, Notebook 2009.
The notebook will be distributed during the opening period of the Biennale along with the City Notebook of Venice, first issued in 2007 thanks to the collaboration between Venice City Council, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation and the famous Moleskine brand.
