SPECIAL: VOICE
Everywhere in the visual art world, voices are rising. In the beginning they spoke about art, today they speak as art. What is the meaning of this shift away from the visual?

MARK BEASLEY; ADAM PENDLETON; MLADEN DOLAR
The VOICE Special presents a comprehensive essay by Mark Beasley, a curator who has studied the various manifestations of the voice in art and culture; Adam Pendleton, a New York artist and performer, famous for the performance Black Dada; and Mladen Dolar, a cultural theorist and expert on psychoanalysis who has investigated the meaning of the voice in several books.

TALA MADANI; JOS DE GRUYTER & HARALD THYS; NATASJA KENSMIL
This issue also features the Iranian-American painter Tala Madani, whose work is currently being shown in the exhibition Unveiled, New Art from the Middle East at the Saatchi Gallery in London (through May 9); a pictorial contribution from the Dutch painter Natasja Kensmil, who places her own work within a broad historical context, and a portrait of the intriguing video work by the up-and-coming Belgian artist duo Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys.

AND FURTHER…
Columns by Hans Christian Dany, Falke Pisano and Paul Elliman; an interview with Vasif Kortun on his museum ambitions, an evaluation of the nominees for the Prix de Rome 2009, reviews of exhibitions in Antwerp, Cairo and Ghent.

ONLINE MAGAZINE: WWW.METROPOLISM.COM
This week, the site offers several previews and reviews of shows in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK; columns by Hans Christian Dany and Charles Esche, an interview with curator Emily Oursel, and a preview of the international conference The Artists in Witte de With Rotterdam.
