Dear Portrait includes twenty international artists, with works that deploy the use of the portrait in various ways, and invites their subjects to respond to the works involving them.
Through painting, sculpture, drawing and video Dear Portrait includes instances where the 'portrait' falls in line with traditional standards, together with those that potentially expand the definition of what portraiture might be.
As a gathering of portraits, Dear Portrait contains a number of conversations between an artist and an individual or a group of people. While this dialogue is inherent in the exhibition, the individuals represented in each work, in being invited to write a text in response to the piece and the artist who produced it, give rise to another. Shown alongside the respective works, each text offers a deeper insight, revealing something that is largely unknown about the artwork or artist—something anecdotal, intimate and sentimental, and always personal.
While Dear Portrait presents portraiture and its various expressions today, it also refreshes the perception and experience of exhibitions as a whole—how they take form, how they are presented and how they are viewed, received and interpreted.
Annette Kelm
20 July–13 October 2013
This exhibition marks the first solo exhibition of the work of Annette Kelm in a UK public institution. Working both in and with the medium of photography, Kelm's unique approach mines a delicate balance between the appearance of the subjects she photographs—for her images reveal in detail, clarity and the fleeting—and their conceptual implications. While clearly taking in various genres of photography, including still life, portraiture, and the language of advertising imagery, they cast a unique analysis on the medium of photography, and question both the objectivity and subjectivity of images and their representation.
Franco Vaccari
20 July–13 October 2013
Since the 1960s, Franco Vaccari has been producing works that are deeply conceptual, poetic, and one of the first in a long tradition in which the viewer is key. This exhibition focuses on Vaccari's works that made ready use of Photomatic kiosks and the audience, and displays a selection of photo strips, among other works, from two key pieces in his oeuvre that were initially made for the 1972 Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennale in 2010.

Gallery 6: Uprisings – Becca Voelcker
20 July–20 October 2013
Gallery 6 is a new initiative at MOSTYN housed in its upper level. It is dedicated to presenting the work of young and emerging artists, all of whom are yet to have a solo exhibition in an institutional setting—nationally or internationally. The Gallery 6 space and its associated programme, titled Uprisings, provide the opportunity for an artist to work under professional conditions, and to present their work to a larger audience. It will bring to MOSTYN a diverse range of artists, at the very forefront of contemporary art practice, from both home and away.
Four Uprisings will occur each year. This, the second of 2013, is by Wales-born artist Becca Voelcker.
Gallery 6 would not be possible without the generous support of Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
