The “Metamorphoses of the virtual. 100 years of art and freedom” exhibit on display at the Officina delle Zattere from 27 May to 31 October was created in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the granting of woman’s suffrage in Norway.
Curator Roberta Semeraro introduces the creative path of four artists: Pia MYrvoLD, ORLAN, Miguel Chevalier and Anne Senstad who demonstrate through their art how technology is a means of extension for human abilities.
A performing workshop will be held during the vernissage of “Metamorphoses of the virtual” which will feature four other internationally known artists at the “Picksel Remote HackLab”. They will demonstrate their experimental project with the use of electronic tools used to build bridges to the spiritual world.
Pia MYrvoLD is the first woman to have examined New Media Art. Her work focuses upon the idea of sculpture as an animated form created through projections in 3-D. Her deep belief in freedom of expression and her socio-political commitment can be perceived through her work and artistic pursuits.
ORLAN is known throughout the world for having invented Carnal Art in which flesh takes on its intrinsic meaning. In “Scalped Freedom” the artist proposes a video in which her self-portrait without skin is featured for the purpose of reintroducing movements of her performance. Presented for the first time at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, this particular genre of self-portrait has become emblematic of her work: emphasizing the question of the body to underline that which we hide beneath our skin, ORLAN displays none else than our deepest threshold, that which we place below the sphere of the visible.
“The Origin of the World” by Miguel Chevalier is inspired by the universe of microorganisms whose cells multiply in abundance and in an autonomous manner to then split up as observers pass by. They can therefore perceive themselves as being placed at the centre of the cyclical rhythm of a world that redevelops itself constantly, becoming not only a mere participant but a protagonist of this evolution.
In her “Universal”, Anne Senstad uses her works in plexiglass and video projections to reside on the limits of architecture, site-specific installations, videos and sculpture. The Norwegian artist uses her art to display her fascination with the concept of natural transformation, specifically with the different aspects of light and spatial perception.
