Paris Photo 2011 at the Grand Palais!

To celebrate its 15th edition from November 10-13, 2011, Paris Photo is being held under the central nave of the Grand Palais-the most spectacular setting that Paris could offer the art of photography. It is also a major step ahead for the renowned international event.
Throughout the four-day event, Paris Photo will celebrate African photography from Bamako to Cape Town, unveiling the creative wealth of historic and contemporary African artists.
A selection of 110 French and international galleries from some 30 countries will present the best of 19th century, modern and contemporary photography in the heart of the French capital.
Some 40 new galleries are joining the Fair for the first time this year. This will reinforce the event's vitality and diversity as well as the quality of artists being shown. To complete this panorama of worldwide photography, a selection of approximately 15 publishers and international specialized bookstores will have a dedicated space at the fair.

These exciting developments put forward the new energy that Paris Photo is displaying by reinventing itself. Four programmes will articulate Paris Photo's new identity, this is an on-going annual basis.

1. Recent Acquisitions

This exhibition features three international museums or institutions presenting their recently acquired photographic works: Tate Modern (London), the International Center of Photography (ICP; New York) and the Musée de l'Elysée (Lausanne). Their acquisitions will be put into perspective. The reasons why they chose to buy these particular works will be at the forefront of these presentations.

2. The Private Collection

This exhibition presents selected works from a private collection, an homage to passion, expertise and curiosity. For the first time in France, Paris Photo will present works from the Walther Collection exhibition Events of the Self: Portraiture and Social Identity, which focuses on modern and contemporary photography from Africa (guest curator: Okwui Enwezor).

3. The Paris Photo Live Platform / The Paris Photo Book Platform

Under the direction of Chantal Pontbriand, curator and art critic, the new Paris Photo 2011 Platform will be centred on the notion of "Mutations." During four days, the Live Platform will feature a series of interviews, roundtables and performances anchored around the notion of Mutations through four different axes: Geography-Technology-Media/Society-The Body.
Parallel to this event, Paris Photo will launch the Book Platform on Mutations published by Steidl. The publication, with 50 authors originating from all continents, is meant to be a major reference in the field. The two Platforms will discuss issues such as the boomerang effects of new territories of art on the Western World, zones of conflict, "mutating" photography and the imagination, tensions between the mechanical and the digital, the effect of social media and the internet, the idea of community and the power of the image, and the body, along with geo-political mutations and art practices.
Authors and participants to the Platform include Simon Baker, Sabeth Buchmann, Victor Burgin, Clément Chéroux, Jean-François Chevrier, Tim Etchells, Christine Frisinghelli, Boris Groys, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Caoimhin Mac Giolla Leith, Cuauhtémoc Medina, Rabih Mroué, Christopher Philips, Jean-Pierre Rehm, Adrian Rifkin, Saskia Sassen, Georg Schölhammer, Sarah Wilson.

4. Homage to the Photography Book

Paris Photo is inaugurating a new space dedicated to specialized publishers and bookstores. These major players in the field will present new and older works, rare or limited editions and will also organise a number of signings with photographers.
To add to this display, an exhibition created by the bookseller Markus Schaden will examine the history and the conception of a cult book on photography, page by page and photo after photo: Love on the Left Bank (1956), from Ed van der Elsken.

Paris Photo is launching the Paris Photo Book Award, thanks to the support of Leica and the Aperture Foundation.
For this anniversary edition, it will celebrate books from the past 15 years.
