As the fourth time for MAM to present works by Macao contemporary artists in the name of ‘Macao, China’ at the Venice Biennale, the exhibition PATO.MEN: Palace Theatre of Memory Encyclopedic, an exercise by Carlos Marreiros will open at 5:30p.m. on 29th May (Wednesday) in Venice, Italy.
The Venice Biennale, a world-renowned visual arts exhibition, was first held in 1895, and this year marks its 55th edition. The MAM has represented Macao to take part in the Biennale since 2007. This year, the Macao exhibition is located in a two-storey building with a courtyard, which is adjacent to the Arsenale, the main venue of the Venice Biennale. MAM has sent its crew to set up the exhibition earlier this month, and it has come to the final phase of the preparation.
Carlos Marreiros, the reputable Macao-born architect, is also one of the most prestigious and representative contemporary artists of Macao. Marreiros’ installation illustrates his exploration on the operation of information, in an attempt to arouse people’s concerns and deliberations on the co-existence of morality, possibly involved in circumstances that information can be manipulated and freely published.
Four local artists, namely Sequeira Pa Keong, Lai Sio Kit, Chan Ka Keong and Denis Murrell, selected by MAM for the‘Participation in Visiting Programme’, will attend the exhibition opening and share their stories on MAM Facebook as well as in some gatherings when they are back to Macao.
The Macao exhibition is located at Campo della Tana. Castello 2126/A, Venice, Italy. It opens daily from 10:00am to 6:00pm (Closed on Mondays except 3/6 & 18/11), 29th May – 24th November 2013. Admission is free.

Building a palace of world knowledge reflecting a world global civilization brimming with unlimited imagination should be one of the aspirations of so many curious and enthusiastic artists. ‘The Encyclopaedic Palace’ - a highly imaginative encyclopaedic palace - is the theme of this yeare’s 55th Venice Biennale, which is assembling a number of outstanding artists from all over the world to jointly explore the unique idea first conceived by the Italian-American artist Marino Auriti in 1955, when he filed a design embracing this concept with the United States Patent Office. Although the utopia conceived by Marino Auriti was not realised, the creation of human civilisation by dint of imagination is ever the motivating factor driving the wise from different areas to move times forward.
Since 2007, the Macao Museum of Art, under the auspices of the Civic and Municipal AffairsAdministrative Bureau, has participated in the Venice Biennale in the name of ‘Macao, China’, attracting more and more attention from arts aficionados.
This year, the Macao Museum Art will showcase PATO?.MEN: Palace Theatre of Memory Encyclopaedic, an exercise by Carlos Marreiros at the Venice Biennale Macao Pavilion. Macao-born Carlos Marreiros is a renowned artist, architect, and urban planner in Macao. He has studied in Macao, Portugal, Germany and Sweden, and has been frequently invited to showcase his works and lecture in galleries and universities in Europe, the U.S.A. and Asia, etc., enjoying high acclaim in the cultural and arts arena of Macao. The artistic creations on show seek to interpret his reflections on issues related to the world flooded by modern technologies and the co-existence of information explosion, knowledge and morality in the form of art (i.e.), that is, sketches and installation, etc., in which he ingeniously echoes the theme of the Venice Biennale ‘The Encyclopaedic Palace’.
Furthermore, the Macao Museum of Art has chosen four Macao artists to proceed to Venice to conduct arts exchanges. The objective of the exhibition and exchanges is to enable local artists to step out of Macao and make their presence in the global arena and the world better understood apropos the current status of Macao’s culture and art.
