Rotterdam Design Prize 2011

Scouting period for Rotterdam Design Prize 2011 has begun

Five scouts began their search for nominations for the Rotterdam Design Prize 2011. They are assisted in this by tips from the design world supplied via the new website designprijs.nl. This is the first time that the Rotterdam Design Prize has been nominated in this way.

Nominations procedure
Designer scouts Sophie Krier, Aziz Bekkaoui, Matthijs van Dijk, Joost Grootens and the duo Ginette Blom & Jacqueline Moors have each been asked to nominate three different designers or projects for the 2011 Rotterdam Design Prize. They have ‘carte blanche’, but must justify their choices. Unlike previous editions, designers will no longer submit their own work. The organisers of the Rotterdam Design Prize hope that the changes to the nominations procedure will help to broaden the discourse around the prize. The scouting process will continue until the end of August. The nominees will be announced on 26 November, when the exhibition opens at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite for the Premsela Public Prize.

Recommend a project
Over the next two months everyone can recommend a designer or a specific project via the website designprijs.nl. All the tips and the reasoning behind them will be posted on the new site. For example, designer Claudia Linders has recommended the work of fashion designers Elena Khurtova and Marie Ilse Bourlanges for their ‘strong concepts and beautiful details’ and Rotterdam-based designer Bas van Beek has put forward the communications campaign Rotterdam Centraal, which he believes is designed in such as way that ‘you feel involved in a process that is as transparent as possible.’

Scout Joost Grootens – winner of the Rotterdam Design Prize in 2009 – is positive about the new procedure: ‘I think the ability to make recommendations via the website and the selection by scouts are great additions to the set-up of the Rotterdam Design Prize. You want the jury to be able to assess the best work there is and not only what people have taken the trouble to send in. The recommendations via the site give an excellent impression of what is currently happening in design and will be something that the scouts cannot ignore in their eventual choices.’

Announcement of nominations
When the scouts have made their choices at the end of August the nominees will be approached to participate in the exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion will organise several talk shows and debates throughout the country to encourage the public to vote for the Premsela Public Prize, which is being presented for the first time under this name. The winner will be selected by an international jury during a debate that will coincide with the art and designs fairs Object Rotterdam and Art Rotterdam around 9 February 2012. The exhibition will close on 12 February 2012.
