The exhibition route
Tortona Design Week 2012 is a rich, diversified container which, as always, lets a
great number of selected international companies speak out with the aim of uniting
the aesthetics of the installations with avant-garde design, technological and
communicative features. The former industrial spaces in the area make up a sort of
living tableau where the individual offers of companies and designers can be
discovered while, at the same time, finding points for wider reflection on the new
trends in living, production and technological innovations and the new social
behaviour.
If we imagine a virtual tour of the area, here are some highlights on the main
contents of the circuit.
MAGNA PARS
The prestigious events space, for years a key player in the animated situation
always in full creative ferment of the Tortona area, will also have an active role in
the Tortona Design Week this year.
All the spaces are for the HOME SPA DESIGN ‘Abitare il Design - Emotional Living’
(Living Design - Emotional Living) event www.spa-design.it, a large exhibition on
emotional design through the project, creativity and contemporary culture where
design quality meets exhibition quality between innovation and perfection.
A stage for the projects of 5 great leaders and their vision of future living. Each one
gives shape to using articles and materials that they consider most appropriate and
able to arouse strong feelings. The result is a showcase of innovative solutions that
open the field to new languages of living.

And also the prize-giving of the CARBON FIBRE DESIGN CONTEST, a competition
which came out of the idea of making architects, designers and planners more
aware of the use of carbon fibre in new sectors with respect to the traditional ones,
using and enhancing the technical features of the material - mechanical strength,
lightness and mouldability. The competition is for the product design sector
(interiors and exteriors) and aims at stimulating the search for new shapes,
meaning the typical language of the material on one hand and the search for
innovation in use due to the particular nature of carbon fibre.
Promoted by Olympus-FRP, specialised in composite materials, carbon fibre and
new technologies serving engineering and architecture with the sponsorship of
ADI – Associazione Per il Disegno Industriale (Industrial Design Association), the
University of Naples Federico II, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and
Confartigianato.
TEMPORARY MUSEUM FOR NEW DESIGN
The Temporary Museum for New Design is returning to Superstudio Più in Via
Tortona 27 for the fourth year, enlarged by the Extension to Superstudio 13. The
exhibition has been designed to host the projects of large brands and those of
certain promise in an original way, following the ‘meno fiera e più museo’ (less
trade fair and more museum) success concept. Gisella Borioli’s project, with the
artistic direction of Giulio Cappellini, plans a succession of more than 50 shows,
often with presentations of stars of design like Italo Rota (for Samsung), Giulio
Cappellini (for Alcantara), Carlo Colombo (for Cristalplant), the brothers Fernando
and Humberto Campana (for Cosentino) and Oki Sato (for Nendo). In the Basement,
the surprising nursery of about 90 new names from around the world.
This year, the event proposes a new connecting thread, ‘Telling a Story’, design
recounted in words, aphorisms and lettering along the common path of the
Temporary Museum with the thoughts of great architects and intellectuals, to
reflect and understand. Graphic installation by the artist Flavio Lucchini.
A large underground space of about 2,000 sq. m at Superstudio Più is for young
talents from around the world. Discovering, other talents, other worlds, other ideas
is a trip through the promises of design in the Basement of Superstudio Più,
accessed from a new independent entrance alongside the main door.
Superstudio Più
Experiences. Unsettling sensory pathways, parallel lives and heightened reality.
Design to live, emotions to feel. Science fiction scenarios take visitors into the
future of technology, the houses of tomorrow. Two installations that evoke a mystic
and conceptual forest in the large room on Canon (by Toshiki Kiriyama). A soft and
unsettling space to rest admiring the video installation of the video-artist Yuri
Ancarani for Alcantara (by Giulio Cappellini). A labyrinth of images, lights and
sounds to narrate Foscarini’s sources of inspiration (by Vicente Garcia Jimenez).
Holograms, plays of light and shadow for the ‘White Air’ installation by Cristalplant
& Poliform (by Carlo Colombo) with the results of the contest between designers
under 40. Innovative modular and interchangeable furniture replacing surfaces for
Ronda Design (by Giorgio Corrà), presented among projections, treadmills and
virtual installations. Kusch+Co present a scenographic installation, evoking
airports and large public spaces, involving all the senses. Its story is narrated with
text, interviews, images and films, with lights, sounds, materials and products (by
Atelier Brückner). The bathroom becomes a library, the bath is as welcoming as an
armchair while you embrace in the soft foam replacing the water. This is the idea of
the Japanese bathroom furniture company Lixil (by Kenya Hara) which surrounds
the most intimate moment with books.
The Diesel home (created in co-operation with Foscarini, Moroso and Scavolini) is
casual, centred around the new ‘Social Kitchen’, perfect ‘party room’ in your house.
Samsung (by Italo Rota) enters the future, in an environment to discover through
heightened reality. The grey, blurred space is transformed and animated
step-by-step using the Galaxy Tab, revealing a smart life and a smart house.
A Solo Show. A personal show with the support and the invitation of Superstudio for
the name with the most awards of the year (Wallpaper and ElleDeco International
Prize), the Japanese firm Oki Sato-NENDO is on display with an all-glass, almost
‘liquid’ installation, ‘Still & Sparkling’, in co-operation with Lasvit.
Collectives from the World. What’s the habitat like, how is creativity expressed,
what do they like in distant countries? The ‘Thailand’s slow hand design’, ‘Inredia’,
‘Wielko-polska Region’ and ‘City of Poznan’ collectives talk of Thailand, Sweden
and Poland through items, furniture, fabrics and accessories from daily life created
by their best designers.
New talents. An important new item is the large underground space of about 2,000
sq. m. in the Basement of Superstudio Più for young talents from all over the world.
Discovering is a journey among the promising of design - 43 young Italian and
international designers and the 24 winners of the Ilide competition on light with the
addition of the 20 designers of the Musei di Carta (Paper Museums) project, little
items designed for Italian museum shops, a project arranged by Aliantedizioni with
the support of Superstudio. The young design seen in Discovering will then go on
sale on-line. The co-operation with the e-commerce site www.dalani.it will debut to
offer the designers proposed by Superstudio the chance of direct entrance to the
market with the products marked by the logo SuperstudioSelection.
Jump into the sun. Everyone is invited into a blinding nocturnal sun, a unique
experience to have wearing the new Carrera 6000 glasses, to be at a performance of
dancers giving short shows from 8.00 pm on the roof of Superstudio Più.
On the first floor. The area of the La Perla showroom turns into a multi-sensory
environment with the De Ponte Studio project that rotates around the fractal
concept. Opposite, the PrimoPiano Alce Nero Caffè restaurant, the perfect mix of
food design and bio quality.
In the garden. The art-garden and external areas welcome large installations
between art and design. Marble turns into sculpture on the path among the trees in
the Turkish Stones garden, with eight surprising appearances arranged by great
international architects, the Berliner Werner Aisslinger, the Dutchman Richard
Hutten, Anglo-Spanish couple El Ultimo Grito (Rosario Hurtado & Roberto Feo), and
Turks Ayse Birsel + Bibi Seck, Can Yalman and Emre Arolat in addition to the works
by the Argentinian Alfredo Häberli and the Briton James Irvine. The public benches
in the area alongside the garden are enormous irregular calligraphic white letters
forming the word ‘design’. This is ‘City Alphabet’ by the Polish sculptor Piotr
Welniak and Michal Bartkowiak, exclusively for Superstudio. And still outdoors, the
installation with strong social valency and great impact in the form of a macro
mattress ‘Occupy!’ by Dejana Kabiljo.
In the window. Superstudio dedicates ‘tu Sottsass’, the little exhibition of new
designs by Fabrizio Sclavi, created in co-operation with the Associazione M.A.T.,
Milano Altri Talenti (Other Talents Milan), in the shop windows on the road at Via
Tortona 27bis, to the unforgettable Ettore Sottsass, great maestro of all
generations, who revolutionised the design world with his Memphis.
Superstudio13
Superstudio 13, at Via Forcella 13, hosts the Temporary Museum for New
Design/Extension this year, the second home of the wider project in Superstudio
Più at Via Tortona 27. The path through the rooms of the historic photographic
studios starts from Leucos, which celebrates 50 years of business in the world of
lighting with an artistic installation of red glass stalactites among the works of G.
Toso, Javier Mariscal and Danilo De Rossi, and continues with the urban living
exhibitions of the Dane HOWE, the sculptural forms of the bio-chimneys designed
by Christoph Pillet and Charles Kalpakian for the Polish Planika, chairs and tables
in recycled and pressed sheet metal by the Brazilian Alê Jordão, the new collection
of the Italian HIKO, ending with the Selected Objects (Cube on Cube, Costa
Crociere, Pierpaolo Pitacco, Ryszard Manczak and SlideArt), little installations of
furniture and accessories from interesting international brands, brought together
by the innovative yet creative content. LG Hausys will present the kitchen of the
future, the latest technology in a conceptual environment created with the
innovative HI-MACS (Acrylic Solid Surface) surfaces in the two large studios looking
onto Via Bugatti 9. Marmo Elite, instead, amazes with an enormous block of solid
onyx, which seems to evoke the mystic forces of nature. The surprises and
discoveries continue with Bureau Detours, Layup Carbonio, Phormalab and Rex
Kralj.
Shows promoted by the non-profit association M.A.T., Milano Altri talenti. In the
temple of photography there had to be a photographic exhibition - ‘AbstrAct’, 50
images with details of design objects like abstract pictures, photographed during
the preceding editions of Design at the Superstudio, created by the photographer
Giovanna Vitale of the Design Faculty of the Politecnico di Milano. In another
studio, ‘ARTernative’, an exhibition of unique pieces of great impact created with
industrial waste by the designer Luca Gnizio for FordesignFor, invites reflection on
the critical points of our time and the role of design.
There are many exclusive services of the Temporary Museum in the two connected
locations. Alongside the usual Dada Caffè and Superstudio Cafè offering
contemporary Italian cuisine there are the bio-restaurant PrimoPiano Alce Nero
Caffè. And also a VIP lounge, temporary shop arranged by Magliettefresche with
T-shirts, bags and Superstudio Collection articles. Car parks, press office,
welcome, info-point, kids-point, meeting room, etc.
TORTONA LOCATIONS
Opificio 31 is the central nucleus of the Tortona Locations itinerary, a large
courtyard in Via Tortona 31, a circuit in the circuit set in a fascinating
post-industrial atmosphere in continual transformation and evolution.
Straightaway at the entrance there is Paola Navone’s project for the famous
Parisian concept store Merci contrasting the launch of the Italian brand HOMMM
with a collection by the Brazilian designer Ricardo Antonio.
Not far away, in Capannone 1, the Dutch brand TuttoBene, platform for new talents
and sustainable projects, presents a selection of young designers, each with a
unique style and aesthetics; the eBay Temporary Loft, Capannone 2, the first
apartment completely for sale at the Fuorisalone.
Moving on, there is Creative Space Serbia, a showcase of Serbian design bringing
the spontaneity and innovation of a new generation of designers to Milan.
Spazio I welcomes the ‘Passing on Project’ created with the support of Toshiba that
puts the concepts of Light, Communication and Happiness together through the
potential of LED technologies.
Infinity is the evocative theme of the ASUS installation, at Spazio QuattrocentoMQ,
in the Opificio 31. The concept has been inspired by the concentric circles of the
ultrabook Zenbook™ covers. A symbol that matches perfection and completeness,
balance and harmony among elements, and highlights in a suggestive atmosphere
featuring Zen references beauty, elegance, research for materials and design of the
differents products presented.
The technology applied to the wellbeing sector is the common thread of the
exhibition I love my wellness in the Textile space.
The German brand vitamin design, producer of trends in the international field of
healthy living, has confirmed it will be at the Vetraio.
In the space of the Emporio, the international architecture and design magazine
AREA from Gruppo 24Ore is organising ‘Ouverture 2012’, a thematic show arranged
by Marco Casamonti for the discovery of design objects that change, open and
close, and reveal and conceal, and is the synthesis of this exploration in the design
world.
Continuing our way along Via Tortona and Via Savona, we find the dense network of
spaces spread in the area of Tortona Locations which will once again present its
personal Tortona Design Week under the banner of internationality and the
multi-culturalism of its exhibitors.
France Design, the largest review of French design ever held in Milan is in the
prestigious Padiglione Visconti. The former industrial shed, now rehearsal room of
the Teatro alla Scala, is proposed as a creative forge putting VIA, the creativity
platform, the most prestigious institutes and design schools and the most
important contemporary names and Les Maison d’Edition together.
There are a significant number of Dutch in the Officine della Torneria, Via Novi 5.
The new brand New Duivendrecht celebrates the launch of its first ever collection,
Frederik Roijè proposes the eclectic project Dish of Desire, while Weltevree
presents a new international co-operation with Feather Down Farm Days and De
Vorm displays a selection of new chairs.
Countries like Turkey, in the Light space with the project ‘The Taste of IST’ are
compared with an exhibition of Brazilian talents, at the Beside.
The long-awaited, award-winning Japanese Nendo will seduce the public with the
refinement and purity of his design in the location Carrozzeria at Via Tortona 32.
Simple materials like glass and wire mesh are transformed into poetic items.
Nespresso is at the same address, entrusting the reinterpretation of, who
reinterprets the post-industrial space of the Torneria as a container of
multi-sensory experiences, an emotive space lit by visions and sounds, an
environment capable of weaving a dense network of sensations, to Piero Lissoni.
Heineken has created the ‘Heineken Concept Club’ project in the Plastic of Via
Bugatti, corner of Via Forcella, creating a unique opportunity for young emerging
designers from all over the world, selected by a jury of professionals, including Luc
Schurgers and Fabio Rotella.
The Studio at Via Tortona 28 is transformed into the house of Agatha Ruiz de la
Prada, in co-operation with major international brands, where the illustrious
Spanish fashion designer will lead visitors in her magic world of living featuring
comic icons in bright colours.
Small companies are very important for the circuit. As a result, the path branches
off in Production at Via Savona 53, giving space to Italian creativity with the Magma
Collection of Made a Mano, Shine Up by Livia Vaccaro and the creations of Barbara
Abaterusso, the result of the synergy between craftsmanship and design.
There’s no design without matter, aesthetics without the beauty and charm of the
materials. This aspect is also part of the Tortona Locations paths. The harmonious
contrast created at Via Savona 35, inside the Officine Savona is particularly
interesting. A new combination between DuPont™ Corian™ techno-surfaces, which
revolutionised the range of colours and offers original interpretations of this
material with e15, Moustache, Rabih Hage and Tao Esterno, and Seguso, one of the
oldest dynasties of Murano in glass art, with the artistic installation ‘Sabbia e
fuoco’ (Sand and Fire) essential elements in the process that sparks the magic of
glass.
Not far away, there is also Impress, which gives form to the 4th dimension through
the colours and themes of paper and cling film and the exhibition of Cleaf that
enables us to see with touch and touch with a look.
NHOW MILANO
The hotel Nhow Milano, Via Tortona 35, presents ‘NaturAlly Nhow’ a selection of
designers and companies whose creativity responds differently to the current
cultural and economic context. A journey that encloses a central theme, an
essential aspect of our time, to summarise a design message aimed at the
environment and eco-sustainability respecting our planet, without forgetting the
design and development and production excellence and quality.
For a week, Nhow Milano will turn into a marvellous art gallery and change its
spaces, shaping them into a real contemporary show which will host collectives,
new brands, collections of young people and already established designers and
independent artists. An innovative concept that summarises a message balanced
between ‘support for talent’ and consecration of the more famous artists-designers
on the international scene.
Worthy of mention among the many contents inside the hotel - ‘Gugliermetto
fratelli multipli – experience’, which offers a high specialisation think tank devoted
to art design to designers, craftsmen and artists who marked the 1960s and 1970s.
A laboratory of ideas and freedom of thought released from marketing and product
theories to find out how the time past and careers have strengthened the creative
vein and made it even more vital and unconventional; ‘HauteMaterial +
GlocalDesign’, a meeting that brings avant-garde technologies and craftsmanship
together. The result is unique pieces in which the mirror-polished steel - ethereal
and concrete - of GlocalDesign is joined with old wood - living material, full of
stories and emotions - of HauteMaterial.
TORTONA 37
MOOOI presents The Unexpected Welcome in its Milan showroom at Via Tortona 37
and offers new pieces which will enrich its extraordinary and iconic production - the
Big Ben clock from the inexhaustible genius of Marcel Wanders, the Container New
Antiques tables, the Valentine lamp, and the divans of the Boutique Sofa series.
And also, the Altdeutsche Möbel furniture collection from Studio Job - Altdeutsche
Cupboard, Altdeutsche Grandfather Clock & Altdeutsche Blanket Chest. All in the
provocative frame created from the new photographs by Erwin Olaf. MOOOI is also
the creator with FRAME Magazine of the FRAME MOOOI Award 2012, an
international competition whose winner will be proclaimed by Philip Starck and
receive a prize of Euro 25,000 in a special evening planned for 18 April at the
Magazzini Generali.
AREA 56
Bisazza, the return to an area that can’t be missed with a grand event at Via Savona
56 (Area 56). Bisazza will present collections designed by Jaime Hayon, Nendo and
Marcel Wanders in an installation labelled Nendo.
At the same address for another long-awaited appearance - Established&Sons, the
refined British brand which chose the area for its debut in 2005, returns seven
years later with a presentation of great impact, as always.
FONDAZIONE ARNALDO POMODORO
Lastly, the large Design Village with the Cappellini, Cassina, Poltrona Frau and
Nemo-Cassina Lighting brands enhanced by the imposing architecture of the
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, in Via Solari 35.
SPAZIO EX-ANSALDO
The scenographic spaces of the Ex-Ansaldo, at Via Tortona 54, will see Meet in
Milano, an extraordinary event conceived and organised by LIVING NETWORK, the
RCS multimedia communication platform on the world of living, with the
partnership of Mercedes-Benz and Franke.
The aim is to talk to the ‘people of design’ through different, complementary
languages to promote the culture of the project and international contemporary
creativity. Design and future will be discussed in the 1,100 square metres of the
Spazio Ansaldo, suggesting multi-level interpretations to talk to different publics to
whom three large projects of international significance will be proposed - the
exhibition from China ‘Slow Seating: Contemporary Chinese Design’, the review of
young talent ‘Meet Talents’ and the display ‘Kitchen Story’.
Still in the Ex-Ansaldo, with entrance from Via Bergognone 34, we’ll find the
collective sculpture exhibition SIGN OFF DESIGN, by Slide ART. Designers and
artists explore the potential of plastic material and resins, supported by
experience, knowledge and skills gained in practice at SLIDE together in the
exhibition arranged by Luca Beatrice designer and artist. Thought and creativity
meet ‘Italian know-how’ in a new concept of art. Project, imagination,
communication, subject and contemporaneity meet 3D design, technology, tools
and entrepreneurial courage, taking shape and animating the SLIDE world in Art.
The team of designers and artists consists of M. Acerbis, A. Agop, Andy, D. Basso,
M. Cattaneo, H.P. Ditzler, J.C. Farhi, F. Giardini, A. Guerriero, F. Lucchini, A.
Mendini, A. Mocika, E.S. Park, B. Pomodoro, K. Rashid, F. Rotella, M. Sadler, D.
Santachiara, S. Soddu and G. Spagnulo.
The sculptures are made in different materials according to the features of the
work (polystyrene, wood, fibreglass and composite materials) and are produced in
limited series, with pieces certified and numbered (9 copies per person).
THE B.BOX
At via Savona 25, ElectricGem Srl and epic srl - PLH® (placca®) have once more
taken up The B.Box, the path started in 2011, proposing its philosophy again. A
magic black box in which the traces of the past and the layers of the successive
works in time, now under reconstruction and at site level, become the background
from which videos, lights and high fidelity sounds and controllers that are highly
aesthetic and of design are created, composed and constructed. Various new items
in the audio and video field and control equipment will be presented at the Tortona
Design Week.
ZONA TARTINA
The Contemporary Japanese Design Exhibition will be the guest of the welcoming
‘tartineria’ at Via Voghera 4, - 8 companies from different parts of Japan will display
products of ancient tradition reworked in a contemporary key. For example,
beautiful Kimonos in denim, round tatami in brilliant colours, laser carved folding
screens, Eco-bags in corn fibre, articles in handmade paper and modern umbrella
lamps.
Still at ZonaTartina, the exhibition Joy of Life, promoted by SOdA_Pforzheim
University - young designers who have just graduated and students of the institute
invite us to try out material used in unusual ways with them, to generate
unexpected tactile experiences that unfold into chairs, lights, food, etc.
MC MAGMA
MC Magma Studio, in its offices at Via Tortona 4, presents the Milanese di
motorcycle design atelier CR&S motorcycles – Café Racer & Superbikes. CR&S
motorcycles shows prodigious design creation entirely handmade, with a handful
of examples a year, named ‘DUU’, ‘two’ in Milanese dialect, a unique model in the
entire world motorcycle panorama.
CR&S motorcycles is a small company, the only factory in Milano for the design and
creation of techno custom motorcycles, unique models, designed with a style and
wisdom that is all-Italian.
CR&S has already become an exclusive cult brand for the production of special
motorbikes, both among enthusiasts and collectors and experts on personalised,
limited edition bikes, because of the refinement and exclusivity of its creations.
121+ LIBRERIA CORRAINI
At Via Savona 17, Tra un Libro e l'altro. Primaproduzione. Oggetti e divertissement.
