Winners of first Daniel Frese Prize
KIM and Kunstraum of Leuphana University of Lüneburg are pleased to announce that the jury has decided to award the Daniel Frese Prize for contemporary art 2011 to Diego Castro. The prize for young emerging artists has been awarded to Katja Staats.
The jury for the 2011 Daniel Frese Prize in Lüneburg, Germany, was chaired by Beatrice von Bismarck (Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig). Members of the jury were Thomas Locher (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen), Bernd Milla (executive director, Art Foundation Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart), Nikolaus Oberhuber (gallery KOW, Berlin), Julia Moritz (curator KIM), and Christoph Behnke (director KIM).
The prize is dedicated to the memory of the painter and cartographer Daniel Frese (1540-1611). During the early phase of the autonomization of the artistic field from the church, feudal principals, and the state, Frese emerged as a versatile artist. He is remembered for his allegorical paintings which created a new visual language. Furthermore, he produced drafts for "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," the world's first city atlas.
The award ceremony took place on July 7th in the historical town hall of the Hanseatic City of Lüneburg. This building has been distinctively shaped by Daniel Frese in the late renaissance period. There, Diego Castro and Katja Staats were prized for their projects by Robert Fleck, the director of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn.
Every year, two prizes are offered for innovative artistic projects on a chosen topic, one of them for young, emerging artists. The theme of the call for proposals for the Daniel Frese Prize changes annually. In the year 2011, the subject was "art and its markets". The call is open for visual artists working in all media.
The 2011 award enables the winners of the prize to participate in the third phase of the exhibition "Demanding Supplies," which is likewise dedicated to the annual theme of "art and its markets". It will open in November at the Kunstraum of Leuphana University of Lüneburg. The prize is designated for the production of a new work based on the proposals for this exhibition.
The jury was unanimous in its decision to award the 2011 Daniel Frese Prize to Diego Castro, since he "succeeds not only in making visible a reflection of his own artistic practice in the mirror of its commodification, but also to translate this reflection into an apt spatial image." The project convinced the jury as "an independent artistic contribution that is also informed by current international debates about the relationship between art and the market."
Diego Castro (born 1972) studied at the art schools of Kiel, Germany, Saint-Etienne and Nantes, France and Geneva, Switzerland. His works have been exhibited in Belgium, Germany, France, Brazil, Israel, Great Britain, Switzerland, and Austria amongst others.
The awardee Katja Staats was selected as an artist who, according to the jury, "achieved to convey the network of relations between artists and gallery owners and collectors in an artistically vivid way. She deploys her independent visual language in order to transform her analyses about economic dependencies into an experiential space which renders them comprehensible for the visitors." Katja Staats (born 1980) is a graduate of the University of Osnabrück, Germany. Her career as an independent artist and director of an open studio started in 2007. Her works have so far been exhibited in Germany, lastly at the Triennial of Photography in Hamburg 2011 and xpon-art gallery in Hamburg.
The Daniel Frese Prize is an initiative of KIM in collaboration with Kunstraum of Leuphana University of Lüneburg. KIM is an interdisciplinary project supporting the markets for avant-garde and emerging art in the region of Lüneburg, which is located in the triangle of the metropolitan regions of Hamburg, Bremen and Hannover. The project KIM is part of the Innovation-Incubator Lüneburg, which is an EU major project, financed by the European Regional Development Fund and co-funded by the federal state of Lower Saxony.
